A who’s who of guitar rock royalty gathered at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Monday night for the first of two concerts honoring the late Jeff Beck, who died in January at age 78.

As Best Classic Bands reports, the show began with Beck’s guitar spotlighted onstage, literally on a pedestal. It continued with performances of songs from throughout Beck’s career, delivered by famous pals like Eric ClaptonRonnie WoodRod StewartZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons and Johnny Depp. The actor toured with Beck during his final tour in 2022 and was reportedly at his bedside when he passed away.

The show began with performances of songs by Beck’s former group The Yardbirds, with former Yardbird Clapton singing lead on “Shapes of Things” and “Heart Full of Soul.”

Later, Clapton, Derek Trucks and Wood performed Beck’s 1966 classic “Beck’s Bolero,” and Gibbons performed “Rough Boy,” the ZZ Top hit that the band and Beck would often collaborate on while touring together.

Other featured songs included 1977’s “Freeway Jam” and “You Know You Know,” a 1971 song by jazz-fusion group Mahavishnu Orchestra that Beck often performed with. Mahavishnu Orchestra’s John McLaughlin, 81, was on hand to play it.

Rod sang his 1984 hit “Infatuation,” which originally featured Beck on guitar, with Clapton and Wood, as well as the hit 1985 Rod and Beck version of “People Get Ready,” for which Rod, Clapton and Wood were joined by Gary Clark Jr.

According to Guitar World, the night ended with an all-star, eight-minute version of the Freddie King blues classic “Goin’ Down,” which Beck recorded in 1972. It was sung by Clapton and performed by nearly 20 guitar players.

Stevie Nicks is crediting Taylor Swift with helping her mourn the death of her Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie.

During a show in Atlanta Monday night, Stevie thanked Taylor for writing the song “You’re On Your Own, Kid” off her album Midnights. She said the lyrics capture how she’s been feeling since her friend passed.

“Thank you to Taylor Swift for doing this thing for me, and that is writing a song called ‘You’re On Your Own, Kid.’ That is the sadness of how I feel,” she told the crowd, as seen in fan-captured video.

She went on to describe her friendship with Christine, saying that no matter how far apart they were or how much time had passed, they could always pick up where they left off. “It was like never a minute had passed, never an argument in our entire 47 years,” she said.

“So, when it was the two of us, the two of us were on our own, kids, we always were,” she continued. “And now, I’m having to learn to be on my own, kid, by myself. So, you help me to do that. Thank you.”

After Christine passed at age 79 last November, Stevie paid tribute to her friend using lyrics from the song “Hallelujah” by Taylor’s pals HAIM.

Kelly Hansen feels “fortunate” to be in Foreigner

Foreigner is in the midst of their farewell tour, and frontman Kelly Hansen is certainly going to miss his bandmates when it’s all over.

“This band is very rare in the sense that you can never anticipate the personalities that are going to be playing in a band with you,” he tells ABC Audio, sharing how special it is “to be in a band where we really enjoy each other’s company, we hang out on off times when we’re not on the road.”

He adds, “We share the same goofy, outrageous sense of humor, so I won’t have those times. That’s gonna be the toughest part I think.”

Kelly says he has great memories of touring with Foreigner, including the people he’s worked with, the venues and the fans.

“I understand how fortunate I’ve been to be involved with this band, and this catalog of songs and these people,” he says. “I don’t take that for granted.”

He says the decision to stop touring wasn’t one he “made lightly,” but says, “I don’t want to give anyone out there any less than I should, or these songs deserve.”

Foreigner’s farewell tour comes to Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, May 23, with dates confirmed through November 13 in Charleston, South Carolina. A complete list of dates can be found at foreigneronline.com.

Metallica’s James Hetfield visits hospitalized Ukrainian soldiers

A pair of hospitalized Ukrainian soldiers got a surprise visit from James Hetfield.

The Metallica frontman recently made a stop at the Vail Health Hospital in his Colorado hometown, which, according to Vail Daily, has been caring for injured Ukrainians as part of the Limbs for Liberty program. He visited with injured soldiers Roman Denysiuk and Igor Voinyi, and “wished [them] luck and [to] get better soon.”

“It was unexpected,” Voinyi says. “I didn’t even believe it at the first moment that it was him. It was very short, but it was a very warm meeting. It would be nice to meet him at a campfire and have a drink, instead of the hospital.”

Following the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Metallica’s All Within My Hands foundation donated $500,000 to the World Central Kitchen Ukraine Relief Fund.

Over the weekend, one of Eddie Van Halen‘s Charvel Art Series guitars was auctioned off for $114,000. If you missed out on that, you can pick up seven of his Charvel Art Series guitars for just $525,000.

Six of the seven guitars were played by the late Van Halen guitar virtuoso onstage over three tours — in 2004, 2007 and 2012 — and are signed by him, as well. The seventh is a custom-built replica of Eddie’s legendary “Frankenstrat” guitar, nicknamed “Frank 2.” It was owned by Eddie, though he didn’t play it onstage.

All seven guitars are being sold as part of one lot at an auction run by Analogr.com, and they all come with certificates of authenticity. At press time, the guitars had not yet reached the reserve price of $525,000 — so far, bidding is only up to $455,800.

Paul Simon can’t play live due to hearing loss in one ear: “Nobody has an explanation for it”

Paul Simon can’t play live due to hearing loss in one ear: “Nobody has an explanation for it”

Paul Simon just released a critically acclaimed new album, Seven Psalms, but he says even if he really wanted to tour to promote it, he can’t — because he’s lost most of the hearing in his left year.

Speaking to the U.K.’s Sunday Times, Simon, 81, says the loss was “quite sudden,” adding, “Nobody has an explanation for it. So everything became more difficult. My reaction to that was frustration and annoyance; not quite anger yet, because I thought it would pass, it would repair itself.”

That doesn’t seem to be happening, which means that Simon can’t perform live, but he says he isn’t particularly eager to return to the stage.

“The songs of mine that I don’t want to sing live, I don’t sing them,” he says. “Sometimes there are songs that I like and then at a certain point in a tour, I’ll say, ‘What the f*** are you doing, Paul?’ Quite often that would come during ‘You Can Call Me Al.’ I’d think, ‘What are you doing? You’re like a Paul Simon cover band. You should get off the road, go home.’”

Simon, who now lives on a ranch in Texas with his wife, Edie Brickell, wrote Seven Psalms after he had a dream on January 19, 2019 — the anniversary of his father’s death.

“The dream was specific,” he says. “‘You are writing, or are meant to write, a piece called Seven Psalms.’ It was a very insistent statement, so much so that I wrote it down.”

The paper he wrote it down on is now framed in his studio, as is a copy of his and Art Garfunkel‘s first single, “Hey Schoolgirl,” which they recorded in 1957 under the name Tom & Jerry.
