Jimmy Page has announced a new version of his signature Sundragon amp, the Nymph.

The updated amp is a smaller edition of the original Sundragon, which was inspired by the amp Page used on Led Zeppelin‘s 1969 debut album.

“The idea came to us that we should create a new amp that embodies the sonic qualities I cherish in my favorite amplifiers, but in a smaller package,” Page says. “One that would be suitable for playing at home, at levels that wouldn’t disturb the neighbors, while retaining the tonal characteristics of the larger amps I love.”

Page first tested out a Nymph prototype following his surprise appearance at the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, during which he performed the famed Link Wray instrumental “Rumble.”

“Despite the excitement and focus that comes with just having played, I was keen to try the amp out with my double-neck Gibson,” Page recalls. “I put it through its paces, searching for familiar tones with the 6-string neck, and smiled. Then came the ultimate test: would this amp be able to stand up to the challenge of reproducing the increased output of the 12-string guitar?”

“To my amazement, not only did it reproduce the 12-string sounds — it did so with flying colors,” he continues. “I just threw my hands up. I’ve got to tell you, that amplifier is absolutely extraordinary!”

On This Day, July 17, 2011: Bruce Springsteen honored Clarence Clemons at New Jersey show

On This Day, July 17, 2011: Bruce Springsteen honored Clarence Clemons at New Jersey show

On This Day, July 17, 2011 …

At Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance for a tribute to his late friend and E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who had passed away in June of that year.

The 45-minute set for 400 fans included soul classics, as well as “Savin’ Up,” which Bruce wrote for Clemons’ 1983 album with the Red Bank Rockers.

Clemons was a member of Bruce’s E Street Band from 1974 until his passing in 2011 at the age of 69. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band in 2014.

In 2012, Springsteen chose Clarence’s nephew Jake Clemons to be the new E Street Band saxophonist. He has performed with them ever since.

Bruce Springsteen continues to bring in the big bucks on tour.

Billboard reports that The Boss’ recent trek with the E Street Band, which kicked off in 2023 and wrapped on July 3 in Italy, was the biggest moneymaker of his career.

The tour, which consisted of 129 shows, brought in $729.7 million, with 4.9 million tickets sold. Those numbers handily surpass Springsteen’s previous highest-grossing tour, the 2012-13 Wrecking Ball World Tour, which brought in $347 million. It also sold more tickets than any previous Springsteen tour, also surpassing the Wrecking Ball World Tour, which sold 3.6 million tickets.

One reason for the increase in numbers is likely do to higher ticket prices. Billboard notes that for this tour, prices were 29% higher than they were for his The River Tour in 2016 and 2017. That tour brought in $200 million, as did The Rising Tour in 2002 and 2003, and The Magic Tour in 2007 and 2008.

Robert Plant nixes another Led Zeppelin doc, has no plan for memoir or biopic

The recent documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin focused on the band’s career up until the release of their second album, 1969’s Led Zeppelin II, and it sounds like fans shouldn’t hold out hope for a second part focused on the rest of their career.

In an interview with Rolling Stone about his upcoming new album, Saving Grace, Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant revealed that he doesn’t think a second part is necessary.

“I think the fact that it ended before we needed to take a shave in the morning was probably the most appropriate,” he told the magazine. “I think that kind of shook up the joyous instance of everything, and then we had to go out and buy a razor, and that was it.”

And Plant doesn’t have any plans to delve into his personal life either, telling the mag there’s “not a chance” he’ll write a memoir.

“I’m going down with the ship, and so is my memory,” he said.

While artists like Queen and Elton John have had successful biopics made about their life and career, Plant isn’t interested in having one made about Led Zeppelin.

“No chance,” he said when asked if he’d ever agree to it. “I’m back on the ship, and I’m going down with it.”

Saving Grace, Plant’s first album with the acoustic band of the same name, featuring vocalist Suzi Dian, is due out Sept. 26.

The artwork of Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart will be the subject of a new exhibit in San Francisco.

Mickey Hart: Art at the Edge of Magic will open at the Haight Street Art Center on July 24. An opening ceremony is set for July 31, the night before Dead & Company’s three-night stand in Golden Gate Park celebrating 60 years of the Grateful Dead.

The exhibit, Hart’s first in a San Francisco-based museum, will feature close to 100 paintings and prints on a variety of surfaces, including canvas, paper, metal drumheads and cymbals. The exhibit includes two large paintings mounted into walls like picture windows, as well as a musical audio experience to complement the installation.

“We could not be more excited to showcase the work of Mickey Hart,” said Kelly Harris, executive director of the Haight Street Art Center. “We have always gravitated to art that transforms and transports viewers. Hart’s entire musical career has been devoted to doing just that, while his art of the past several decades has expanded this ethos into the visual realm.”

Art at the Edge of Magic runs through Sept. 21. More info can be found at HaightStreetArt.org.

David Byrne drops ‘She Explains Things to Me’ from upcoming solo album ‘Who is the Sky?’

David Byrne drops ‘She Explains Things to Me’ from upcoming solo album ‘Who is the Sky?’
Matador Records

David Byrne has shared another track from his upcoming solo album, Who is the Sky?, which is his first album since 2018’s American Utopia.

The latest is “She Explains Things to Me,” described as partially inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s 2014 collection of essays, Men Explain Things to Me.

“Many times I have marveled at how a friend (usually a female friend) seems to clock what is going on in a film between characters way before I do,” says Byrne. “Sometimes I understand poetry, but sometimes I need help. Though inspired by the Solnit book Men Explain Things to Me, there is a huge difference – mansplaining is usually unasked for, in this case I am the one asking.”

“She Explains Things to Me” is available now via digital outlets.

Who is the Sky? will be released Sept. 5 and is available for preorder now. The album features special guests St. Vincent, Paramore’s Hayley Williams and The Smile drummer Tom Skinner.

Byrne will kick off a new North American tour in support of the album on Sept. 14 in Providence, Rhode Island. He’ll wrap up the tour in Miami Dec. 5 and 6. He recently added some new shows to the trek, including a third show in Philadelphia, a fourth in Chicago and a third in San Francisco. A complete list of dates can be found at DavidByrne.com.
