Pete Townshend on ‘celebrating’ The Who’s legacy on tour: ‘Why shouldn’t I revel in it?’

Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey kicked off The Who’s The Song Is Over North America Farewell Tour Saturday, and it sounds like Pete is a bit ambivalent about being on the road.

“It can be lonely. I’ve thought, ‘Well, this is my job, I’m happy to have the work, but I prefer to be doing something else,'” he says in a new interview with AARP magazine. “Then, I think, ‘Well, I’m 80 years old. Why shouldn’t I revel in it? Why shouldn’t I celebrate?'”

Discussing the band’s decision to continue following the death of members Keith Moon and John Entwistle, Townshend notes that The Who is “a brand rather than a band.” He adds, “Roger and I have a duty to the music and the history.”

“The Who [still] sells records —the Moon and Entwistle families have become millionaires,” he says. “There’s also something more, really: the art, the creative work is when we perform it. We’re celebrating. We’re a Who tribute band.”

And while The Who has said this will be their final tour, it may not necessarily be the last we see of them.

“We reserve the right to pop up again,” Pete says, “but I think one thing is very clear: that at our age, we will not.”

He adds, “Roger and I certainly [will] work together for charity and possibly for special projects. Together we represent all aspects of The Who legacy.”

He notes, “[W]e’ll continue to work together, even if we rarely socialize.”

The Who’s The Song Is Over North America Farewell Tour hits Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday. A complete list of dates can be found at TheWho.com.

Looks like The Beatles have some news to share.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers appear to be teasing some upcoming news with various posts on social media and their website.

On Instagram they posted pictures of the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4, each featuring images associated with the band. On X they posted a video with audio of a countdown and screaming fans as images of the band members are shown with the same numbers flashing in front of them.

Both posts include Paul McCartneyRingo Starr and George Harrison tags, as well as a link to the band’s website, which features what appears to be the back of a canvas frame, with the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4. There’s also a place for fans to sign up for the latest Beatles news.

As for what The Beatles may be teasing, speculation in the social media comments seems to be focused on a possible fourth installment in the band’s Anthology series.

The Beatles released their original Anthology album, titled Anthology 1, in 1995, featuring rarities, outtakes and live performances from early in their career. It also included the new song “Free as a Bird,” which at the time was the first new Beatles song in 25 years. The song incorporated an old demo recorded by John Lennon with new music recorded by McCartney, Starr and Harrison.

The original release was followed by Anthology 2 and Anthology 3, which covered later years of the band’s career. Both came out in 1996, with Anthology 2 also featuring a new song, “Real Love.”

All three Anthology albums topped the Billboard 200 Albums chart.

Queen’s Brian May reveals he’s working on new mixes of 1974’s ‘Queen II’

Queen’s Brian May reveals he’s working on new mixes of 1974’s ‘Queen II’
Hollywood Records

Back in October, Queen celebrated their self-titled debut album with the release of a box set that featured a remixed and remastered version of the album, which they renamed Queen I. Now it looks like their sophomore album, 1974’s Queen II, may be getting a similar treatment.

Queen guitarist Brian May hinted at the news in a post on Instagram, which included video of him tinkering in the studio with the Queen II song “Funny How Love Is.”

In the post, May invited fans “back into the world of Queen II,” calling it “surely the best Queen album EVER!!!”

“Just having fun here, switching things in and out so we hear things we never really noticed before,” he writes. “This new stereo mix is quite adventurous — and, rendering the impossible complexity of these tracks, the new clarity is astounding.”

He added that because of the work of their sound team, “this ancient work, from when we were still just learning how to reach for the stars, will open up a new world to many who care about these arcane dreams as much as we do.”

And to make sure fans know they aren’t doing the work just for themselves, he offered, “Can’t wait to share the new mixes with you when we are done … and … OMG !!!” He notes, “When we get to the Dolby Atmos surround mixes I will be in Heaven !!! Because we’ll finally be able to do justice to all the multiple layers in these tracks – a mere 52 Years later !!!”

The BBC has shared a statement regarding its decision to postpone the premiere of the new Ozzy Osbourne documentary, Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home.

As previously reported, the BBC pulled the doc Monday, the same day it was set to debut. At the time, the BBC said, “The film has moved in the schedules and new transmission details will be confirmed in due course.”

In an updated statement published Tuesday, the BBC says, “Our sympathies are with the Osbourne family at this difficult time. We are respecting the family’s wishes to wait a bit longer before airing this very special film.”

The BBC adds that a new premiere date will “be confirmed shortly.”

Ozzy died on July 22 at age 76, just over two weeks after he performed for the final time with Black Sabbath at the Back to the Beginning concert on July 5. The BBC had announced Coming Home on Aug. 7.

“Filmed over three years, [Coming Home] captures the extraordinary roller-coaster of their lives as Sharon [Osbourne] and Ozzy attempt to complete their long-held dream of moving back to the UK, Ozzy heroically battles to get fit enough to perform, and the family deal with the dramatic consequences of his ill-health,” a press release reads.

The BBC had originally planned Coming Home as a documentary series called Home to Roost before reworking it into a hour-long standalone film.

Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh has a backup plan if band doesn’t get into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Devo has been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame three times — in 2018, 2021 and 2022 — but has yet to be chosen for induction. But not being selected for the prestigious institution isn’t about to stop the band’s co-founder and lead vocalist Mark Mothersbaugh.

In a new interview with New York Magazine’s Vulture column, Mothersbaugh says he has an “alternative plan” should the band never get selected for the Rock Hall, which is located in Cleveland.

“I’m looking to buy a piece of the parking lot, like maybe one parking space adjacent to the museum,” he tells the mag. “In Ohio, they have very lax laws on where you can bury remains. I was thinking I would transfer all of Devo’s remains to that one parking spot. We’d just dig down underneath it and bury everybody.”

“So if we weren’t in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, we could be adjacent to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That would take some of the pressure off,” he adds. “And you could still park on top of us; we don’t mind. If you help us get the parking spot right next to the Rock Hall, I’ll make sure you get a free parking permit whenever you’re there.”

But until then, Devo has several shows on their calendar for 2025. Up next, they are set to open for My Chemical Romance in Chicago on Aug. 29. They will then play the Shaky Knees festival in Atlanta on Sept. 21. Their next Cosmic De-Evolution headlining date is Sept. 24 in Toronto. A complete list of dates can be found at ClubDevo.com.

Fleetwood Mac founder Mick Fleetwood made a special appearance Saturday night at the second annual Maui Music and Food Experience.

The two-day event took place Friday and Saturday at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Hawaii, with Fleetwood turning up for a Jimi Hendrix tribute during a set by Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk. Other special guests during the performance included The Isley Brothers‘ Ernie IsleyBernard Fowler, best known for his longtime career singing backup for The Rolling Stones; and blues rock guitarist Wayne Baker Brooks.

The Maui Music and Food Experience helped raise $200,000 for the Hua Momona Foundation and its charitable efforts to help the Lahaina community. The organization plans to hold another event on Nov. 7 in Chicago.

Fleetwood also performed at the inaugural Maui Music and Food Experience, as did Neville and Fowler. It took place in September 2024, and raised money for essential services like food and housing for the survivors of the 2023 Maui wildfires. Fleetwood himself was a victim of the fires; his Maui restaurant, Fleetwood’s on Front Street, was one of the many businesses destroyed.

Neil Young plays anti-corporate track ‘This Note’s For You’ for the first time since 1997

Neil Young famously blasted corporate sponsorship invading rock and roll in the 1988 song “This Note’s For You,” and it appears that he’s still not happy about it.

During his show Sunday night, he performed the song during his encore, which according to setlist.fm marked the first time he’s performed the track since 1997. The song directly calls out corporations like Coke, Pepsi and Budweiser in its lyrics. The choice to add it to his set Sunday was notable as he was headlining a venue sponsored by a corporation, the Budweiser Stage in Toronto.

“This Note’s For You” was the subject of some controversy when the song was released. The title was inspired by Budweiser’s “This Bud’s For You” campaign, and the video for the track parodied popular ads that featured music and appearances by artists like Eric Clapton, Genesis and others, and included impersonators of Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.

MTV initially refused to air it but the network eventually added it to the rotation and it went on to win video of the year at the 1989 MTV VMAs.

And Young fans in Canada may get to hear him perform the song again. He’s set to play the Budweiser Stage in Toronto again on Tuesday.
