Billy Joel‘s “Turn the Lights Back On” is his first hit in many years. While Billy co-wrote the song, he didn’t write the lyrics — they were written by one of his co-writers, Freddy Wexler, the same guy who co-produced the song and co-directed the video. But even though Billy has generally written all his songs himself, Wexler says he was fine with singing words he didn’t write.

“I think because Billy has had an astounding career, writing 100% of an entire catalog, he doesn’t have anything to prove,” Wexler tells ABC Audio. “He certainly was not out there looking for outside songs or outside ideas. But he also didn’t have the ego to block the opportunity from happening.”

Wexler initially wrote the words to the song after being inspired by a rough patch in his parents’ marriage, but he tried to write it in the way that Billy, his hero, would have written it, which is why, Wexler says, he was so comfortable singing it.

“What was interesting here is that on many records Billy plays a character. On this record, he plays the character who happens to be him,” Wexler explains. “So in the weirdest way, it’s one of the most natural vocals I’ve ever heard of him.”

“He said that to me himself,” Wexler adds. “He said, ‘On this record, I wasn’t trying to be Ray Charles or McCartney. I just sang naturally.’ And that was probably the greatest thing that could have ever happened, that he had that experience with it.”

Wexler hopes to work with Billy on more music in the future. In the meantime, Billy has added “Turn the Lights Back On” to his set list.

The Beach BoysMike Love is ready to introduce a new line of premium rum through his company Club Kokomo Spirits, which until now has been known for its canned cocktails.

The new collection comes in three varieties: Artisanal White Rum, featuring an aroma of honey and pineapple, with notes of melon and mango; Barrel Finished Rum, a blend of 8-year-old and 10-year-old Jamaican, Barbadian and Dominican rums finished in bourbon barrels; and Tahitian Vanilla Rum, which uses whole Tahitian vanilla beans, resulting in notes of vanilla and spice.

“The spirit of Kokomo is the serenity and good vibrations you feel when hanging out with your closest friends or family, preferably on a sandy beach,” Love shares. “We took it, distilled it and bottled it for everyone who takes a sip to enjoy, anywhere. Much like a Beach Boys song.”

All three rums are distilled locally in San Diego, and are blended and bottled by hand. They will be available to order online and to purchase at select retailers. More info can be found at clubkokomospirits.com.

The Rolling Stones are due to launch their Hackney Diamonds tour in April, and it looks like frontman Mick Jagger has started getting himself ready to take the stage.

Although he doesn’t often play guitar during Stones shows, the rocker shared video on Instagram of him practicing guitar as his less-than-interested-looking dog hangs out in the background. He captioned the clip, “Looking forward to seeing you all when the tour starts next month!”

The Hackney Diamonds tour is The Stones’ first U.S. trek since their 2021 No Filter tour. It’s due to kick off April 28 in Houston, Texas, and has them headlining the New Orleans Jazz Fest on May 2. David Lee Roth appears to be giving his seal of approval to a recent cover of the Van Halen classic “Jump.”

The rocker just shared a black-and-white video featuring footage of him at various New York locations, set to Alex Melton’s recent acoustic alt-pop indie rock cover of “Jump,” which was Van Halen’s only #1 song.

Melton is known for his YouTube videos in which he takes popular songs and reworks them in different musical genres. He described his take on “Jump” as “If Jump by Van Halen was written for Millennials.”

Back in December Roth shared his own solo take on “Jump,” which he recorded live at Henson Studios in Los Angeles. It was one of several Van Halen songs he rerecorded, including “You Really Got Me,” “Dance The Night Away,” “Panama” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.”

Huey Lewis is owning up to a huge mistake he made during his career. During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday, March 18, he revealed that in the height of his career in the ’80s, Bob Dylan sent him a song, and he did nothing with it.

“He sent me a cassette and a lovely note saying he liked the last record and here’s a song of mine,” Huey shared, explaining, “Not only did I not cut it, I don’t actually know where the cassette is.”

He clarified that he didn’t actually lose the tape, noting, “It’s part of my cassette collection, where there’s thousands of cassettes there. So I can probably find it eventually.”

Dylan is considered by many to be one of the best songwriters of all time and even won a Nobel Prize for his lyrics. So, why didn’t Lewis record the song?

“I have no idea. It was a big mistake, what can I say? I’m sorry,” Huey said, adding, “Note to self: when Bob Dylan sends you a song, record it.”

Huey was on Kimmel to promote his new Broadway musical, The Heart of Rock and Roll, which begins previews at the James Earl Jones Theatre on March 29 and opens April 22. Info on tickets can be found at heartofrocknrollbway.com.
