The Kinks releasing 50th anniversary reissue of "Arthur" in October; listen to previously unheard tune

Written by on July 30, 2019

BMGThe Kinks have unveiled full details about the 50th anniversary reissue of their 1969 concept album, Arthur (or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire), which will be released October 25 in multiple formats and configurations.

A deluxe-edition box set of the reissue will feature four CDs, including remastered stereo and mono versions of the original album, alternate mono and stereo mixes, B-sides, rehearsal tracks, BBC mixes and single edits.  Also included: the so-called “lost” solo album that guitarist Dave Davies recorded around the time of Arthur‘s release, with bonus tracks.

In addition, the box features a Ray Davies-compiled medley of unreleased demos, two new songs that Ray recorded with The Doo Wop Choir, three other previously unreleased tracks, and new remixes Ray created of the songs “Australia” and “Shangri-La.”

You can check out a new song called “The Future” by Ray and The Doo Wop Choir at The Kinks’ official YouTube channel, and the track also is available as a digital single.

The Arthur box set comes packaged with a 68-page softcover book containing essays by Kinks experts, photos, the script for a canceled play written in conjunction with the album, new interviews with original Kinks members Ray Davies, Dave Davies and Mick Avory, and more. The collection also includes four vinyl seven-inch singles in replica vintage sleeves, and a metal and enamel Kinks logo pin.

Released on October 10, 1969, Arthur was partly inspired by Ray’s sister Rose and her husband moving to Australia in 1964. The critically acclaimed album wasn’t commercially successful, although it did include one minor hit: the enduring song “Victoria.”

The 50th anniversary Arthur reissue also will be available as a two-CD set, a two-LP vinyl collection and digitally.
