Metallica‘s latest album, 2016’s Hardwired…to Self-Destruct, will turn three this November, and the metal legends are starting to look towards their next effort. Guitarist Kirk Hammett is particularly excited to return to the studio, and, as he tells Australia’s Mixdown magazine, he’s well-prepared to do so.
“We’re in our third year since Hardwired. Maybe we can get a bit more focus and go into the studio a bit sooner,” Hammett says.
The guitarist adds that he has “a ton of material” for another album.
“I’ve over-compensated,” he admits. “So I’m ready to go anytime.”
Prior to Hardwired, Metallica last album was 2008’s Death Magnetic, and Hammett says they don’t want to wait another eight years for a follow-up.
“None of us are very comfortable with the fact it’s been so long, because that is a long time,” he says.
“We’re hoping to avoid that this time around.”
Metallica’s WorldWired tour continues May 1 in Portugal, and has dates scheduled into November 2019.
