INXS and Petrol Records, the label that handles the Australian band’s music outside of the U.S., have tapped renowned producer Giles Martin as their executive music director to oversee future projects and releases involving the group.
Among the planned projects are an INXS documentary, a unique live theater production incorporating the band’s songs and remixed and expanded reissues of the group’s various albums.
Martin became friendly with INXS back in the 1990s, and his previous collaborations with the band include a greatest-hits compilation and a recent Dolby Atmos mix of Kick for the 30th anniversary deluxe reissue of the smash 1987 album.
“Having worked across several phenomenal INXS releases over the years, I am thrilled to be extending our musical relationship,” says Giles in a statement. “INXS are one of the most important rock bands in history, I am honored to be collaborating with them again and look forward to contributing to the spectacular experiences the band are creating for their fans.”
Martin, who is the son of late Beatles producer George Martin, is best-known for his work on a variety of archival Fab Four releases. He also co-produced Paul McCartney‘s most recent solo album, 2013’s NEW.
INXS enjoyed a string of hits from the mid-1980s through early ’90s, including the 1987 chart-topper “Need You Tonight,” but the band’s career lost momentum after the 1997 death of lead singer Michael Hutchence at age 37 from an apparent suicide.
