2018 Grateful Dead "Meet-Up at the Movies" screening to feature footage of 1989 Philadelphia concert

The eighth annual edition of The Grateful Dead‘s one-night-only “Meet-Up at the Movies” screening event will take place at theaters across the U.S. on August 1, coinciding with what would have been the late Jerry Garcia‘s 76th birthday. This year’s event will feature a concert film documenting the last show ever played at Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium, which was held on July 7, 1989.
Among the songs featured in the group’s set were such original Dead gems as “Box of Rain” and “Fire on the Mountain,” as well as renditions of the new songs “Blow Away” and “Standing on the Moon,” both of which later appeared on the band’s final studio album, 1989’s Built to Last.
The Dead also played covers of Willie Dixon‘s “Little Red Rooster” and Bob Dylan‘s “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again” and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” The latter tune closed the concert, thereby making it the last song ever performed at JFK Stadium.
The Grateful Dead’s lineup at the time of the show featured singer/guitarists Garcia and Bob Weir, drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, bassist Phil Lesh and keyboardist Brent Mydland.
In addition to footage of the complete concert, the screening event will offer viewers an inside look at the limited-edition Grateful Dead box set that will be released this year.
The 2018 “Meet-Up at the Movies” screenings will be held at more than 500 U.S. theaters and will start at 7:00 p.m. local time. Visit FathomEvents.com to purchase tickets and check out a list of the locations where this year’s event will take place.
