The Beach Boys‘ Mike Love and ex-Doobie Brother Michael McDonald are among the artists scheduled to perform at the 10th annual “We Write the Songs” event, which is being held Wednesday in Washington, D.C., at the Library of Congress’ Coolidge Auditorium.
The invite-only gathering is presented jointly by The ASCAP Foundation and the Library of Congress, and it celebrates the annual gift that the Foundation — a division of the performers-rights organization ASCAP — presents the Library of Congress. Those gifts include manuscripts, lyric sheets, letters and photos from some of the country’s greatest songwriters.
Other performers at the gala include Suzanne Vega and Jason Mraz. The event will be co-hosted by ASCAP Foundation president and legendary songwriter Paul Williams.
The “We Write the Songs” event is held a day before ASCAP’s annual “Stand with Songwriters” Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. Many of the performers who take part in the event will meet with lawmakers and urge them to update federal regulations governing how songwriters license their work in the age of digital music.
This year, ASCAP members are lobbying members of the Senate to support the Music Modernization Act, a bill passed unanimously by the House of Representatives in April that would offer copyright protection to songs written prior to 1972.
