Goin' Virtual: Concerts by The Who & KISS can be viewed via new virtual-reality app

Concerts by The Who and KISS are among the first music events that can be experienced now via a new virtual reality app called MelodyVR. Viewers can watch a February 2016 show that The Who played at London’s Wembley Arena and a May 2017 KISS performance at London’s O2 Arena from multiple viewpoints using the platform, which currently is available in the U.S. and U.K. for Oculus GO and Samsung Gear VR.
The Who’s concert can be viewed from four “jump spots,” runs an hour and 51 minutes, and features 19 songs. The KISS show can be watched from eight “jump spots,” runs an hour and 40 minutes, and features 16 tunes.
Who frontman Roger Daltrey notes that a virtual-reality app like MelodyVR was foreshadowed in a legendary concept project his band mate Pete Townshend created decades ago.
“In 1971, Pete Townshend wrote a science fiction musical called Lifehouse about a future where people didn’t have to leave home to get real life experiences from outside their four walls, we thought it was mad!” Daltrey explains. “But he proved to be right and MelodyVR have managed to bring this to life.”
MelodyVR is planning to stream live concerts in the coming months. Visit MelodyVR.com for more information.
In other news, Daltrey has added three concerts to his U.S. summer tour itinerary — a July 10 show in Verona, New York; an August 12 date in Paso Robles, California; and an August 18 performance in Indio, California. These shows will feature Roger playing with a backing group featuring members of The Who’s touring band.
As previously reported, Daltrey also will play special concerts in June and July that will showcase a full performance of The Who’s 1969 rock opera Tommy with orchestral accompaniment.
